Ohio State University Golf Course -Scarlet, is a Private, 18 hole golf course located in Columbus, Ohio. Ohio State has two 18 hole golf courses, The Scarlet and The Grey.
Established in 1938, the Ohio State University Scarlet Golf Course is rated the best collegiate facility in the country by Golf Digest.
Dr. Alister MacKenzie, designed the original routing plans. In 2005 and 2006 the Scarlet Course underwent a major restoration project overseen by former Buckeye legend Jack Nicklaus. Jack concentrated on restoring the course to the way Alister MacKenzie originally intended it to play. The bunkers were redesigned to appear more like the classic MacKenzie designs at his numerous other courses. The course was also lengthened to play more than 7,400 yards and the par was changed to 71. The driving range was also enlarged and a short-game practice area was built for both of the varsity golf teams as well as another one for the members of the club.
Located two miles northwest of the main campus at the corner of Kenny and Tremont Roads, the Par 71 course carries a rating of 76.1 with a slope of 142. From the championship tees, it stretches out to 7,455 yards of rolling terrain and contains a 9 1/2-acre lake and winding stream that creates challenging play on several holes. The large contoured greens are surrounded by strategically placed bunkers, adding to the difficulty of the course.
Besides the Scarlet Course, the University Golf Club also has a second course, the Gray Course.

This is sacred ground, the epitome of "a good test" -- fair off the tee, and marvelous green complexes -- a putting challenge akin to Pinehurst #2, especially if the approach is left in the wrong place ... you could leave the green muttering!
But, since the course is primarily designed to separate champions from the near-champions, the amateur golfer should appreciate the chance to experience this lofty test.
Those of us fortunate enough to get a crack at The Scarlet are reminded of the humility that true golf has a tendency to exact.
